MATCH-DAY grub, you can't beat it.

Burgers with that sweet scent of fried onions, hot dogs, pies, chips, gravy, all washed down with a piping hot Bovril... or pint of beer.

For one fan, their weekend was made by a £3 special at Alfreton Town.

Chips, mushy peas and gravy, served with a wooden spork.

Alfreton may have lost their FA Trophy clash at home to FC Halifax Town on penalties, but the perilously piled polystyrene plate more than made up for that.

That's non-league football at its finest.

But apparently, this ultimate comfort food is not to Americans' taste as hundreds flocked to Twitter to share their disgust at the Saturday afternoon special.

One tweeted: "Never been glad to be American before until now."

Another wrote: "Is the UK a real place?"

A third joked: "Y’all will make whole threads on our biscuits and gravy, but then turn around and eat this..."

The vicious war of words quickly took a turn though as furious Brits backed their local delicacy.

Some even lashed out at the American critics for their choice of foods, including hotdogs topped with mac and cheese and FRUIT LOOPS cereal, as well as chocolate chip pancake-wrapped sausages on sticks.

Alfreton Town official account got in the act, too, to defend their honour.

Retweeting the original snap, they wrote: "We seem to have upset a few of our neighbours across the pond with this one...

"This is proper footy scran and £3 is a bargain, we won’t hear otherwise."

Too right.
