Los Angeles Police Department officers shot a man armed with a knife who reportedly said he was planning on hurting someone on Saturday in Highland Park.

Police were called to the area at around 12:25 p.m., near York Boulevard and Avenue 56, for reports of a man armed with a gun.

"Upon arrival, the officers encountered the suspect in a stairwell who was advancing towards them armed with a large knife," said LAPD. It was then that they opened fire.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and taken to a nearby hospital. He is said to be in stable condition and is expected to survive.

His identity was not revealed, but police noted he was 51-years-old.

Officers recovered the weapon at the scene.

With SkyCal overhead, a large police presence could be seen, with multiple buildings blocked off by crime scene tape as investigators surveyed the area, which included several buildings and a parking lot.

No officers or bystanders were injured during the incident.
